CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS (Updated january 19, 2011)

Name Description

 

Art Club

 

The Art Club is open to the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students. This club meets to work on projects such as the Junior Duck Stamp competition, State Fair, and Orangeburg County Fair, etc. All students in the eighth and ninth grades interested in art are welcome. Grades seven, eight, and nine are encouraged to participate in the after-school Art Club every Thursday after school from 2:45-3:30 p.m.

 

Band

Middle School Band is open to any OPS Middle School students. There are no pre-requisites to join the band. It is not necessary to know how to read music prior to joining. This group performs at Christmas, the SCISA Music Festival, and at a Spring concert every year.

High School Band is open to any OPS High School students. There are no pre-requisites to join the High School Band. This group performs yearly at the Christmas concert, SCISA Music Festival, and at a Spring concert every year.

 

Chess Club

The Chess Club is led by Mr. Rojas at Orangeburg Prep. Sixth through twelfth graders are encouraged to participate. Each fall, the OPS Chess Club competes in the SCISA Chess Championship.

 

Drama Club

The Drama Club consists of members who are interested in participating in plays; either performance-wise or backstage and in production crews. Members of the Drama Club assist in the production of the Middle School Christmas Program, in One-Act Plays, and any other time that a performance need or situation arises. This club is open to both Middle School and High School students.

 

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

(FCA)

FCA -- The Fellowship of Christian Athletes encourages its members to live out their faith in Christ on and off the playing field. FCA meets every Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. for a devotional message and prayer, and is open to all students in grades 9 through 12.

 

Fellowship of
Christian Students

(FCS)

Fellowship of Christian Students is for any student in grades sixth through eighth. FCS meets every Thursday morning at 7:30 in the Upper Campus Library. They talk, have devotion, pray, and sometimes eat breakfast. This is an awesome way to fellowship with friends and get closer to God. Please come and join us!

 

Fine Arts

The Fine Arts Committee at Orangeburg Prep supports the program development in fine arts at both campuses, with attendance at meetings on an as-needed basis by the Headmaster and/or a member of the Board of Directors. Since its inception, our current full-time studio art teacher, Mrs. Sulejman and our music/drama teacher, Mrs. Sullivan, have been recruited for the Upper Campus and Mrs. Millhouse (music) and Mrs. Wyrosdick (art) at the Lower Campus. Projects have included: fundraising, design and completion of renovations at the Upper Campus for a Fine Arts wing, visiting artist residencies at both campuses each year to enrich arts education for our students. Girls Club

Girls Club is open to the seventh grade girls. The goal of our club is to promote good character, healthy life styles, service learning and self- esteem. We meet once a month and work on community projects. Girls Club has guest speakers, service projects, and participates in community events.

 

High School Academic Quiz Bowl

The High School Academic Quiz Bowl team participates in the SCISA Regional Quiz Bowl Tournament held each November. Team members are chosen by the sponsor from the AP English 12, AP Calculus, and English III Honors classes. The team practices for two-three weeks leading up to the tournament. Winners and high-scoring teams become eligible for the SCISA State Quiz Bowl Tournament held the week of Thanksgiving.

 

High School Math Team

The High School Math Team is comprised of six students - five team members and one alternate. The team members are usually chosen from the Junior and Senior classes and are students who excel in higher level mathematics. During the school year, the Math Team practices for an annual competition with other SCISA Divsion I schools. The competition is usually held in January and is comprised of a written test and a speed round. Each year, the High School Math Team represents Orangeburg Prep academically well during the competition.

 

Junior Student
Council

Junior Student Council is formed to provide leadership through a stable government for the students of the Middle School. The Junior Student Council is responsible for promoting school spirit through various activities and also supporting the Senior Student Council. The Junior Student Council takes part in supporting charities and projects in the community throughout the school year.

 

Junior National Honor Society

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is by invitation only and is open to eighth and ninth graders who have earned a cumulative 4.0 GPA beginning with their sixth grade year. These students must also meet the requirements of character, leadership, service, and citizenship. Our chapter is active in service. Our main service project is collecting toys for the "Toys for Tots" program. Our members are required to earn a certain number of service hours each year and can do so in the community or within our school.

 

Key Club

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership through competent, capable, and caring leaders through the vehicle of service.
Key Club International is the high school organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. Key Club assists Kiwanis in carrying out its mission to serve the children of the world. High school student members of Key Club perform acts of service in their communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels.

Key Club meets the third Tuesday of each month during activity period at school.

Lego Club

FLL (First Lego League) is an exciting and fun global robotics program that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science, and technology in kids ages nine through fourteen. Each year FLL teams embark on an adventurous challenge based on current, real-world issues. Guided by Mrs. Thornton, the kids research and solve real-world problems based on the challenge; then present their research and solutions and build an autonomous robot using engineering concepts.

 

Middle School
Academic Team

The Middle School Academic Team is comprised of seventh and eighth grade students who are knowledgeable in math, science, history, language, literature, music, art, spelling, current events, and government. They practice once a week in preparation for the Regional SCISA Middle School Academic Quiz Bowl in February. The winner of each Regional Quiz Bowl then competes in the Middle School State Quiz Bowl

 

Middle School Garden Club

The Garden Club, "Bloomin' Buddies" is open to any student in the Middle School who has an interest in gardening. The goal of our club is to teach basic gardening to the students. By having a "Master Gardener" sponsor our club, we are able to beautify the Upper Campus with plants, containers, and landscaping projects!

Math Team

The Middle School Math Team is composed of seventh and eighth grade students who demonstrate excellence in mathematics These students practice weekly after school in September and October in order to prepare for the SCISA Math Meet which takes place in late October.

 

National Honor
Society

Membership in the National Honor Society is by invitation only and is open to juniors and seniors with a 4.0 or above GPA who also meet the requirements of character, leadership, and service.  The chapter is very active in school and community activities such as adopting families referred from our local hospice for Thanksgiving and Christmas, offering free face painting at all home football games, and entertaining our three-year-old day care children with an Easter Egg hunt complete with the Easter Bunny.  All funds raised are given back to the school or various local charities.

 

Rotary Club

Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary Clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of:

*Developing leadership skills and personal integrity.
*Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others.
*Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work.
*Advancing international understanding and goodwill.

 

Senior Student
Council

Senior Student Council is an organization designed to aid the school and surrounding community in charitable activities. Student Council is responsible for governing the Upper School Student Body, as well as promoting school spirit and organizing school functions (Halloween Carnival, Homecoming, etc.). Student Council is also continuously involved with school and community service projects.

 

The Tribe

The Tribe is comprised of students in grades 6th through 12th whose blood runs red, white, and gray. The Tribe always has a strong showing of support at all Orangeburg Prep athletic events. Sponsoring theme nights for all athletic teams, The Tribe has continued to show great support for Indian sports.

 

Yearbook
The Yearbook staff is considered to be a club activity for some students. Editors must be seniors with a 3.5 GPA or better. Section editors are usually made up of senior students and the business editor, and staff are comprised of junior level students. The yearbook activity club is opened to all High School students and meets several times a year to support the efforts of the Editor Staff.
